New Zealand’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) has issued the new bi-weekly newsletter. It contains the news about the Privacy Act 2020, recent privacy survey, the new Privacy Act 2020 e-learning module,details of the Commissioner’s promotions of the new Privacy Act and the schedule of the Simply Privacy workshops.

The Parliament has passed the new Privacy Act 2020. It will come into effect on 1 December 2020. Key takeaways are:

• Mandatory notification of harmful privacy breaches

• Introduction of compliance orders

• Binding access determinations

• Controls on the disclosure of information overseas

• New criminal offences 

• Explicit application to overseas companies carrying on business in New Zealand


In the recent survey 65 percent of New Zealanders want more privacy regulations. They are mainly concerned about how organizations share their personal data (75 percent),theft of their banking details (72 percent), and security of personal information online (72 percent). Some of them (41 percent) were concerned with the use of CCTV and facial recognition.


New Privacy Act 2020 e-learning module is available in the OPC’s library of e-courses.


John Edwards, Privacy Commissioner, will start promoting the new law with a number of regional visits.


Simply Privacy workshops - These training sessions are designed for new or out-of-practice Privacy Officers looking for practical, useful information about 'how to Privacy Officer’.
